I present the most badass gifset on Tumblr.

This is the best thing.
Why this cartoon is the best cartoon.
Tai Chi, Hung Gar, Shaolin, and Ba Gua are all distinctly Chinese martial arts with profound connections to Chinese culture, history, philosophy, and spirituality. I have a problem with divorcing these arts from their original culture and presenting them in a fictional cultural context that comes out of a Western imagination. That’s one major reason I couldn’t get into that show (there are others): tons of material “borrowed” from Chinese culture without explicit lineage or attribution or proper contextualization or meaning.
For example, the Four Elements were shown using Chinese characters in the opening montage, but had no other narrative association with the Chinese Taoist philosophy of the Five Elements which interact with one another in a perpetual cycle. The show’s understanding of the Four Elements, with associated Nations with peaceful or warlike characteristics, came closer to the Greek idea of elements, not Chinese ideas. They only used the Chinese characters and martial arts to make it look cool, but without the actual philosophy or meaning. If that works for you, great; but it’s not gonna work for someone like me who grew up with the Chinese philosophies and martial arts being “borrowed from”.
